Sylentis S.A. created in 2006, is a bio-pharmaceutical company 100% participated by the Zeltia Group. Its activity is centred on research and development of new medicaments based on RNA interference (RNAi) gene silencing technology. This mechanism reduces protein production by selectively inhibiting protein synthesis. This type of molecules acts at an earlier stage than present drugs: it doesn’t block already existing proteins, but inhibits the actual protein creation. In 2006 doctors Andrew Fire from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Craig Mello from Harvard University, received the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine, for their pioneering work on RNAi, proving the relevance of this discovery. The discovery of RNAi is an authentic revolution in Biology, and it enables drug design and development from a completely new perspective. Sylentis wishes to become a reference company within the RNAi field and, more particularly, within the fields of ocular, inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. To achieve this goal we have a team of highly qualified people with broad experience in the RNAi field, who are constantly trained and updated with the latest technical and scientific advances in the field.
